RESEARCH:  6. Novel Reduced-risk and Selective Chemical Controls

After the Food Quality Protection Act (FQPA) was implemented in 1996, several broad-spectrum insecticides have been under review, scheduled for cancellation, or severely restricted for use in blueberries and cranberries due to potential surface water pollution, negative effects on wildlife, and worker exposure. Tolerance reassessment of broad-spectrum insecticides is likely to impact the blueberry and cranberry industry more than any other crop because of their minor crop status, zero tolerance for insect pests, high potential for insect infestation, and quarantine and contamination concerns.

It is critical that new selective, reduced-risk insect management strategies become available to blueberry and cranberry growers, specially because growers do not have immediate reduced-risk alternatives for control of several blueberry and cranberry pests in New Jersey.

Our team is currently evaluating several new reduced-risk insecticides for the control of blueberry maggot, cranberry weevil, thrips, cranberry tipworm, cranberry fruitworm, Sparganothis fruitworm, aphids, oriental beetle grubs, cranberry blossomworm, leafhoppers, among others. These efficacy trials are being conducted with the support of the New Jersey Blueberry/Cranberry Research Council, the American Cranberry Growers' Association, the Cranberry Institute, and various insecticide companies.
